AERO Vodochody Aerospace
A.22
The AERO Vodochody A.22 is a Czech‑designed, twin‑engine turboprop introduced in 1998 as the successor to the earlier L‑410 program. Developed by AERO Vodochody Aerospace, the A.22 was intended to meet growing demand for rugged, short‑take‑off and landing (STOL) transport aircraft capable of operating from unprepared airstrips in remote regions. The airframe retains the classic high‑wing, all‑metal construction of its predecessors while incorporating a modern glass cockpit, digital flight‑control systems, and upgraded PT6A‑140A turboprop engines delivering 1,200 shaft horsepower each. These powerplants provide a cruising speed of 300 knots, a range of 1,500 nautical miles, and a payload capacity of up to 3,800 kilograms, allowing carriage of 19 passengers or mixed cargo. Advanced avionics, including GPS‑based navigation and automatic weather‑avoidance, enhance safety in challenging environments. Since entering service, the A.22 has been adopted by civil operators in Africa, Asia, and South America, as well as by several military and humanitarian agencies for troop transport, medevac, and disaster‑relief missions. Its blend of durability, versatility, and modern technology solidifies its role as a key asset in the evolving landscape of regional aviation. The platform continues to receive incremental upgrades, ensuring compliance with emerging emission standards and operational requirements worldwide.
