Avia 14T

The Avia 14T is a turboprop transport aircraft developed by the Czech manufacturer AERO Vodochody Aerospace in the early 1970s as an evolution of the earlier Avia 14 series, itself a licence‑built version of the Soviet Ilyushin Il‑14. Designed to meet both civil and military requirements, the 14T incorporated a modern turboprop powerplant—the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A‑27—as well as updated avionics, a pressurised cabin and reinforced landing gear. First flight took place on 22 June 1972 and the type entered service with Czechoslovak State Airlines and the Czechoslovak Air Force later that year. The aircraft could carry up to 30 passengers or transport cargo, parachute troops, and perform medevac missions, making it a versatile workhorse for regional routes and short‑haul logistics. Its efficient fuel consumption, rugged construction and ability to operate from unpaved airfields gave it a reputation for reliability in harsh Central European climates. Though produced in limited numbers, the Avia 14T demonstrated how Eastern Bloc manufacturers could integrate Western engine technology, influencing subsequent regional turboprop designs and cementing AERO Vodochody’s reputation as an innovative aerospace firm. Today a few examples remain in museum collections, preserving its legacy for future generations.
