Soko G-4 Super Galeb

The Soko G‑4 Super Galeb is a Yugoslav‑designed, twin‑engine jet trainer and light attack aircraft that entered service in the early 1980s. Developed by the Aeronautical Technical Institute in Belgrade and produced by the Soko factory in Mostar, the Super Galeb was intended to replace older trainer types and provide a modern platform for pilot conversion to supersonic fighters. Its first flight took place on 22 June 1978, and serial production began in 1980, delivering more than 130 aircraft to the Yugoslav Air Force. Powered by two Rolls‑Royce Viper turbofan engines delivering 2,900 lbf thrust each, the G‑4 achieves a maximum speed of Mach 0.9 and a service ceiling of 45 000 ft. The aircraft features a side‑by‑side cockpit with dual controls, modern avionics, and a hardpoint capacity of eight for rockets, bombs, and missiles, allowing it to fulfill ground‑attack, close‑air‑support, and reconnaissance missions. Its robust airframe, low operating cost, and excellent handling made it a popular trainer throughout the Balkans and attracted interest from several export customers. The Super Galeb’s versatility and prolonged service record underscore its significance as one of the most successful indigenous jet trainers of the Cold‑War era.
