AB 206B-1 JetRanger

The Agusta‑built AB 206B‑1 JetRanger is a light, single‑engine turbine helicopter that entered service in the early 1970s as the Italian‑licensed version of Bell’s iconic Model 206B. Agusta obtained production rights in 1971 and began assembling the aircraft at its Sampierdarena plant, quickly adapting the design for European operators and for military export. The JetRanger’s compact airframe, powered by a 420‑shaft‑horsepower Allison 250‑C20B turboshaft, delivers reliable performance across a wide temperature envelope and can operate from unprepared pads. Key features include a semi‑rigid four‑blade main rotor, a spacious cabin that accommodates three passengers plus pilot, dual‑circuit hydraulic flight controls, and an all‑glass avionics suite that was upgraded throughout its production run. Its excellent visibility, low operating cost, and straightforward maintenance made it a favorite of police, search‑and‑rescue, and training units worldwide. Over 1,200 units were built, and the AB 206B‑1 helped cement Agusta’s reputation as a premier rotorcraft manufacturer, paving the way for later models such as the AW109 and the modern‑day AW119. Its legacy endures in both civilian and military aviation circles. Today, many operators still rely on its proven design for versatile missions.
