Bell 205 of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army Aviation

The Bell 205 operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Army Aviation is a licensed‑built version of the iconic UH‑1 “Huey,” produced under an agreement between Bell Helicopter and Italy’s Agusta. During the 1970s, before the 1979 revolution, Iran purchased a substantial fleet of Agusta‑built 205s to modernise its rotary‑wing arm, taking advantage of Agusta’s expertise in adapting the airframe for hot‑and‑high environments and for local maintenance. The aircraft entered service in 1974 and quickly became a workhorse for troop transport, medevac, close‑air support and logistical missions across the rugged terrain of the Iranian plateau.

Key features include a single Lycoming T53 turboshaft engine delivering up to 1,400 shaft horsepower, a two‑blade main rotor, and a spacious cabin capable of carrying up to 14 fully equipped soldiers or an equivalent cargo load. The Agusta‑manufactured version incorporated reinforced airframe components, revised hydraulic systems and optional armament stations for machine guns or rocket pods, enhancing combat flexibility. Its rugged simplicity, ease of repair, and proven reliability have ensured longevity, with many airframes still flying after four decades of service.

The Bell 205’s presence in Iran underscores the lasting impact of Cold‑War era technology transfer, illustrating how licensed production can extend the operational lifespan of a classic design and cement its role in regional aviation history.
