Cessna AC-208 Combat Caravan

The Cessna AC‑208 Combat Caravan is a militarized version of the proven Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, developed through a partnership between Cessna Aircraft Company and Alliant Techsystems (ATK). First introduced in the early 2000s, the aircraft was designed to give low‑cost, high‑visibility support to irregular‑warfare and humanitarian missions. ATK supplied the modular hard‑point system, advanced avionics suite and optional weapon stations, allowing the airframe to carry up to 2,000 lb of ordnance, sensor pods, and communication equipment. Powered by a single Pratt & Whitney PT6A‑135 turboprop, the Combat Caravan retains the rugged fixed‑gear design, short‑takeoff and short‑landing capability, and can operate from unimproved airstrips or austere environments. Its cockpit features an integrated digital map display, night‑vision‑compatible instrumentation, and a self‑protected communications suite. Since entering service with the U.S. Army National Guard, the AC‑208 has been employed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, close air support, and disaster‑relief transport. Its affordability, ease of maintenance, and ability to be quickly reconfigured have made it a valuable asset for both domestic and expeditionary forces, influencing the broader trend toward adaptable, low‑intensity‑conflict platforms. The platform continues to evolve with upgraded ISR payloads and expanded export opportunities, cementing its role in modern tactical aviation.
