X-55

The X‑55 is a light‑weight, single‑engine trainer and reconnaissance aircraft developed by Armenia’s Aerotech Armenia in the early 2020s. Initiated in 2018 to lessen reliance on foreign platforms, the prototype rolled out in June 2021 and made its first flight in September, achieving certification from the Armenian Civil Aviation Authority in 2023.

Featuring a carbon‑fiber fuselage and low‑wing layout, the X‑55 weighs up to 1,250 kg and cruises at 420 km/h. It is powered by a 260 hp Rotax 915 iS turbocharged engine driving a five‑speed propeller, giving a range of 1,800 km and a service ceiling of 9,500 m. The glass cockpit includes dual 10‑inch LCDs, GPS/INS navigation and a tactical data link for real‑time image transmission. Optional EO/IR pods and a light‑payload hardpoint enable border‑patrol, target‑acquisition and limited light‑attack missions.

The X‑55 is Armenia’s first fully indigenous fixed‑wing aircraft, showcasing a growing domestic aerospace capability and creating a nascent supply chain. Its low acquisition cost and versatile role have attracted interest from neighboring states, positioning the type as an affordable option for nations needing modern trainer and ISR platforms. Ongoing development includes an electric‑propulsion variant planned for introduction in 2027.
