ATR
ATR 72
The ATR 72 is a twin‑engine turboprop regional airliner produced by the Franco‑Italian joint venture ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale). Launched in 1988 as a stretched version of the successful ATR 42, the first delivery occurred in 1989 and the type quickly became a staple for short‑haul carriers, especially in Europe, Asia and South America. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127 engines, the aircraft delivers 2,800 shaft‑horsepower each, enabling a cruise speed of about 530 km/h and a range of roughly 1,300 nautical miles with a typical passenger load of 70‑78 seats. Its high‑aspect‑ratio, composite wings provide excellent lift‑to‑drag characteristics, delivering low fuel burn and short take‑off and landing performance on runways as short as 1,200 meters. The cabin features a spacious, low‑floor layout that improves passenger comfort and expedites boarding. Over 1,200 units have been built, making the ATR 72 one of the most prolific regional turboprops in history. Its reliability, economical operating costs, and ability to serve remote airports have cemented its role in connecting regional markets and sustaining the growth of regional air transport worldwide.
