Socata TBM 850

The Socata TBM 850, introduced in 2006 by the French aerospace company Daher‑Socata, represents a pivotal evolution of the long‑standing TB series that began with the TB10 in the 1980s. Building on the success of the TBM 700, the 850 incorporated a more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A‑66D turboprop delivering 850 shaft horsepower, which enabled cruise speeds up to 320 knots (590 km/h) and a maximum range of 2,300 nautical miles. Advanced aerodynamics, including a five‑blade composite propeller and refined wing‑tip design, improve efficiency and reduce cabin noise. The aircraft features a spacious, pressurized cabin with state‑of‑the‑art avionics such as the Garmin G5000 suite, offering synthetic‑vision, autothrottle, and optional single‑pilot IFR capability. Its high performance combined with operating costs comparable to high‑performance piston twins made it attractive to business travelers seeking jet‑like speed without the expense of a light jet. The TBM 850 cemented the turboprop’s role in the premium market, influencing subsequent models like the TBM 900 and encouraging other manufacturers to pursue high‑speed, single‑engine designs, thereby reshaping short‑haul corporate aviation. Today over 500 units are in service worldwide, underscoring its lasting impact on fast, efficient general aviation.
