Diamond DA42
The Diamond DA42 Twin Star, produced by Austrian maker Diamond Aircraft Industries, entered service in 2004 as the company’s first twin‑engine, four‑seat light aircraft. Developed from the successful single‑engine DA40, the DA42 incorporated a carbon‑fibre airframe, modern avionics and the efficient Austro‑engine AE 300 turbo‑charged powerplants, delivering about 115 hp per engine. Its first flight on 15 April 2002 demonstrated a blend of low drag design, high aspect‑ratio wing and advanced composite construction, which together give a cruise speed near 210 kt and a fuel burn of roughly 10 US gal per hour—exceptional economy for a twin. The aircraft quickly earned certification from the FAA, EASA and other authorities, and has been adopted by flight schools, corporate operators and military training units worldwide. Notable features include a glass cockpit with Garmin G1000, optional autopilot, de‑icing boots, and a “Turbulence‑Free” ride thanks to the inherent stiffness of the composite structure. The DA42’s success paved the way for subsequent models such as the DA50 and the DA62, reinforcing Diamond’s reputation for innovative, environmentally friendly general aviation solutions and cementing the twin’s role as a reliable bridge between single‑engine trainers and larger business aircraft.
