Dornier C-146A Wolfhound
The Dornier C‑146A Wolfhound is a medium‑lift, twin‑engine transport aircraft developed in the early 2020s by the German aerospace company Dornier. Originating from the civilian Dornier 328 platform, the C‑146A was extensively modified for military use, incorporating a reinforced airframe, upgraded avionics and a rear cargo ramp to enable rapid loading of troops, vehicles and supplies. First flight took place in March 2022, and the type entered service with the United States Air Force in 2024 under the Air Mobility Command’s “Rapid Global Mobility” program.
Key features include two Rolls‑Royce AE‑2100 D2 turboprop engines delivering 4,600 shaft horsepower each, a maximum payload of 13 metric tons, and a range of over 2,500 nautical miles with a full load. The cockpit is equipped with a glass display suite based on the NATO‑standard Integrated Mission System, while the interior can be reconfigured for cargo, medevac, or airborne command roles within ten minutes. The Wolfhound’s short‑field performance, rugged landing gear and ability to operate from austere airstrips make it valuable for expeditionary operations.
Its significance lies in providing a versatile, cost‑effective bridge between light tactical aircraft and large strategic airlifters, strengthening rapid response capabilities for allied forces and influencing future modular transport designs.
