Elbit Hermes 900

The Elbit Hermes 900 is a medium‑size, long‑endurance unmanned aerial system (UAS) developed by Israeli defence contractor Elbit Systems Ltd. Its development began in the early 2000s as a successor to the Hermes 450, with the first flight recorded in 2005 and initial operational deployment occurring in 2006. Since then more than 400 airframes have been delivered to customers across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia, making it one of the most widely exported tactical UAVs.

Key features include a wingspan of 15 metres, a payload capacity of up to 300 kg, and an endurance of up to 30 hours at a cruising speed of 190 km/h. The platform can be equipped with electro‑optical/infrared cameras, synthetic‑aperture radar, signals‑intelligence suites and maritime surveillance radars, all managed through a secure, satellite‑linked ground control station. Its modular design allows rapid re‑configuration for ISR, border patrol, disaster monitoring or communications relay missions.

The Hermes 900’s significance lies in its blend of reliability, long‑range capability and multi‑role flexibility, setting a benchmark for medium‑altitude UAVs. It has reshaped modern intelligence‑gathering practices, contributed to force‑multiplication in several armed forces, and demonstrated the growing strategic role of unmanned platforms in both civilian and military aviation.
