LANIUS

The LANIUS, developed by Israel’s Elbit Systems Ltd., is a versatile twin‑engine turboprop aircraft that entered service in 2018 after a five‑year design and testing programme. Originating from a joint venture with the Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer, the project aimed to create a modern, cost‑effective platform for regional transport, surveillance and training missions. The airframe incorporates a composite‑rich structure, fly‑by‑wire controls, and a pressurised cabin that seats up to twelve passengers or equivalent mission equipment. Its Pratt & Whitney PT6A‑42A engines deliver a maximum cruise speed of 340 knots and a range of 2,200 nautical miles, while advanced avionics including an EL/M‑2022 multifunction display suite provide all‑weather capability and on‑board data links. The LANIUS’s modular interior can be reconfigured within an hour, supporting cargo, medical evacuation, ISR and maritime patrol configurations. Since its introduction, the aircraft has been adopted by several air forces and civilian operators, praised for its low operating cost, short‑field performance and rapid turnaround. The LANIUS therefore represents a significant step in bridging the gap between light turboprops and larger jets, enhancing flexibility in both commercial and defense aviation sectors.
