EMT X-13

The EMT X‑13 is a light‑sport, single‑engine monoplane produced by the German firm EMT Penzberg. Development began in early 2020 as a response to the growing demand for affordable, low‑maintenance aircraft for flight‑training schools and private owners. The prototype first flew on 12 May 2022 from Penzberg Airport, and after a successful certification program it entered series production in late 2023. The X‑13 incorporates a carbon‑fiber airframe with a semi‑monocoque fuselage, giving a maximum take‑off weight of 600 kg and a cruising speed of 210 km/h. It is powered by a Rotax 915 iS turbocharged engine delivering 141 hp, linked to a six‑speed gear‑reduction propeller. Notable features include a glass cockpit with dual‑screen avionics, retractable tricycle landing gear, and optional electric‑assist flaps that reduce stall speed to 65 km/h. The aircraft’s low operating cost—approximately €30 per flight hour—and its ease of handling have made it popular in European flight schools. By combining modern materials, efficient powerplants, and advanced avionics, the EMT X‑13 represents a significant step forward in democratizing general aviation and revitalizing the regional training market. Its introduction also spurred several collaborative projects with aerospace universities, fostering research in sustainable airframe design and hybrid propulsion concepts.
