Glasflügel
H-204 Standard Libelle
The H‑204 Standard Libelle is a classic single‑seat Standard‑class sailplane produced by the German manufacturer Glasflügel between 1975 and 1984. Developed as an evolution of the earlier H‑102, the Libelle incorporated advanced composite technology, using glass‑reinforced plastic for its wings and fuselage, which gave it a smooth aerodynamic profile and reduced weight. With a 15‑metre wingspan, Schempp‑Hirth air‑brakes, an all‑moving tailplane and a fully sealed cockpit, the aircraft achieved a glide ratio of about 38:1 and a low sink rate that made it competitive in national contests. Optional water‑ballast tanks allowed pilots to adjust wing loading for varying weather conditions, while the simple yet effective control layout contributed to its reputation for pleasant handling. Over 500 units were built, and the Standard Libelle quickly became a favorite among club pilots and competition flyers across Europe and North America. Its success helped establish Glasflügel as a pioneer in fibreglass glider construction and set performance benchmarks that influenced later designs such as the Standard Cirrus and the ASW 19. Today the Libelle remains a cherished classic, often seen in historic glider rallies and preserved in museums.
