G 120

The Grob G 120 is a single‑engine, low‑wing trainer aircraft built by the German manufacturer Grob Aircraft. Development began in the early 1990s to replace aging piston‑engine trainers and to meet the growing demand for a modern, composite‑airframe platform that could serve both ab initio and advanced training roles. The first flight took place in 1995 and series production started shortly thereafter, with deliveries to military and civilian customers across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Key features include an all‑composite airframe that provides a high strength‑to‑weight ratio, corrosion resistance and reduced maintenance costs. Powered by a Lycoming IO‑540 flat‑six engine delivering 300 hp, the G 120 offers a maximum cruise speed of 235 kt and a range of roughly 800 nm. The cockpit is equipped with a glass‑panel avionics suite, dual controls, and can be configured for either conventional or side‑by‑side seating, allowing seamless transition to the more sophisticated G 120TP turboprop variant.

Its significance lies in delivering a cost‑effective, versatile training solution that bridges the gap between basic propeller trainers and high‑performance jet aircraft, helping air forces worldwide to standardize pilot instruction while lowering overall fleet expenses.
