ICON A5

The ICON A5 is a light sport aircraft that has become a cultural icon since its debut in 2014. Developed by ICON Aircraft, a company founded in 2006 by Kirk Hawkins and Blake Scholl, the A5 was conceived as a recreational aircraft that could be stored in a garage‑sized hangar and launched from water or runway with a single, fold‑up wing. Its first flight took place on June 23, 2008, and after a rigorous certification process it received FAA approval as a light‑sport aircraft in December 2015. The A5 features a carbon‑fiber monocoque fuselage, a 100‑horsepower Rotax 912iS engine, retractable hydro‑foil floats, and an intuitive glass cockpit with a 10‑inch touchscreen. A patented “spin‑resistant” wing design eliminates stalls, while the aircraft’s modular safety parachute can be deployed in an emergency. With a cruising speed of 120 knots, a range of 400 nautical miles, and the ability to take off from lakes, rivers, or paved strips, the A5 has broadened access to flying for pilots seeking simplicity and adventure. Its blend of sport‑plane performance, amphibious capability, and striking design has reshaped the light‑sport market and inspired a new generation of aviators.
