Ilyushin Il-112
The Ilyushin Il‑112 is a modern Russian turboprop transport aircraft designed to replace the ageing Antonov An‑26 fleet. Development began in 2016 under the auspices of the Ilyushin Design Bureau, with the Russian Ministry of Defence issuing the initial requirement for a short‑range, rugged cargo plane capable of operating from unpaved airfields. The prototype performed its maiden flight on 22 May 2019, and after extensive testing it entered low‑rate production in 2023. Powered by two Klimov VK‑5000 turboprop engines delivering 5,500 shp each, the Il‑112 can carry up to 4,500 kg of cargo, 30 troops, or a combination of passengers and equipment. Its high‑wing design, reinforced undercarriage, and rear cargo ramp provide excellent ground clearance and ease of loading. Advanced avionics, a digital flight‑deck, and fly‑by‑wire controls give the aircraft modern situational awareness and reduced crew workload. The Il‑112’s versatility makes it suitable for logistics, medical evacuation, parachute drops, and maritime patrol missions. By offering a cost‑effective, NATO‑compatible platform, the Il‑112 strengthens Russia’s tactical airlift capability and signals a renewed focus on utility aircraft within global aviation. Its projected service life of 30 years and export potential underline its strategic importance for both domestic and foreign operators.
