Ilyushin Il-14
The Ilyushin Il‑14 is a twin‑engine, all‑metal transport aircraft developed in the Soviet Union shortly after World War II. Designed by the Ilyushin Design Bureau to replace the aging Lisunov Li‑2, the prototype first flew on 26 July 1950 and entered service in 1954. Powered by two Shvetsov ASh‑82 radial engines, the Il‑14 could carry up to 24 passengers or a mixed cargo‑personnel load, and its range of roughly 2 300 km made it suitable for both domestic routes and longer international flights. Notable features included a reinforced fuselage, pressurised cabin in later variants, and a robust under‑carriage capable of operating from unpaved airfields, which broadened its utility in remote regions of the USSR and allied states. Over 1 300 airframes were built in several versions, such as the civilian Il‑14A, the military transport Il‑14T, and the maritime patrol Il‑14M. The aircraft served with airlines, military transport squadrons, and even in polar research missions, establishing a reputation for reliability in harsh climates. Its widespread use throughout the 1950s and 1960s cemented the Il‑14 as a key link in Soviet civil and military aviation, influencing subsequent designs and international air‑lift capabilities.
