Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company
Fotros
Fotros, developed by Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (IAMIC), is the nation’s first indigenously designed and produced turboprop transport aircraft. The program began in 2007 under a strategic directive to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and to create a versatile platform for both civilian and military logistics. After a seven‑year design phase, the prototype rolled out in 2014 and completed its maiden flight in 2015, demonstrating the company’s capacity to integrate modern avionics, composite structures, and a rugged airframe.
Key features include a high‑wing configuration for short‑field performance, a pressurised cabin that can accommodate up to 30 passengers or 8,000 kg of cargo, and a dual‑engine layout powered by locally manufactured Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A‑67A turboprops. Advanced flight‑control systems, satellite navigation, and a self‑defence suite of chaff and flare dispensers enable operations in contested environments. The aircraft also incorporates corrosion‑resistant aluminium‑lithium alloys, reducing maintenance costs.
Fotros holds symbolic and practical significance: it showcases Iran’s growing aerospace engineering expertise, supports domestic transport needs, and offers a platform for future upgrades such as surveillance or maritime patrol variants, marking a milestone in the country’s aviation self‑sufficiency.
