IAI S-2T Turbo Tracker
The IAI S‑2T Turbo Tracker is a modernized version of the classic Cessna 337 Skymaster, re‑engineered by Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd (IAI) in the early 1990s. IAI acquired the type’s production rights and, recognizing the aircraft’s unique push‑pull configuration, fitted it with two 300‑shaft‑horsepower Pratt & Whitney PT6A‑34 turboprop engines, replacing the original piston units. First flight of the S‑2T took place in 1993 and serial production began shortly thereafter, targeting both civilian utility markets and military customers seeking a rugged, short‑take‑off‑and‑landing platform.
Key features include a twin‑engine layout that provides centre‑line thrust, eliminating asymmetric yaw in an engine‑out scenario, and a high‑mounted wing with a 12‑meter span that grants excellent ground‑clearance and visibility. The aircraft can operate from unprepared strips, carry up to 1 800 kg of payload, and cruise at 350 km/h while consuming only about 300 kg of fuel per hour. Avionics are upgraded to glass‑cockpit standards with GPS, autopilot and modern communication suites.
The S‑2T’s significance lies in its blend of proven airframe geometry with modern turboprop reliability, making it a versatile workhorse for surveillance, transport, and training missions worldwide. Today the S‑2T continues to serve operators in over twenty countries, demonstrating its enduring value.
