M-345
The M-345, also known as the HET (Helicopter Electra Trainer), is a modern basic‑to‑advanced training helicopter produced by Leonardo Aerospace. Its development began in 2015 when Leonardo decided to replace the aging A109 trainer fleet used by many European air forces. After a rapid prototyping phase, the first prototype flew on 5 December 2015 and certification was achieved in 2022, allowing entry into service with the Italian Air Force and several NATO partners. The M-345 features a compact airframe derived from the AW119, powered by a Turbomeca Arriel 2D turboshaft delivering 600 shp, and equipped with a digital glass cockpit with dual primary flight displays, full‑authority digital flight control system, and multi‑function touchscreen panels. Its modular avionics suite supports simulated night‑vision, instrument‑flight training, and mission‑specific payloads such as a light armament kit. The aircraft’s low operating cost, high reliability and the ability to transition pilots to larger helicopters make it a key element in modern rotary‑wing training programmes. By standardising pilot preparation across NATO members, the M-345 strengthens interoperability and ensures a new generation of pilots is ready for next‑generation combat and transport helicopters.
