Pipistrel Panthera

The Pipistrel Panthera is a sleek, four‑seat, low‑wing aircraft that represents a milestone in the evolution of light‑sport and general‑aviation design. Conceived by the Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel in 2012, the Panthera emerged from the company’s extensive experience with electric and hybrid propulsion, aiming to combine high efficiency with conventional gasoline power. Its first flight occurred in June 2013, and after a series of test‑program milestones the model received EASA certification in 2020, becoming the first European‑certified, high‑performance, four‑seat aircraft to meet both sport‑pilot and private‑pilot licensing categories.

Key features include a composite airframe with a carbon‑fiber fuselage and wing, a retractable tricycle landing gear, and a modern glass cockpit that integrates Garmin G1000 NXi avionics. The standard powerplant is a 200‑horsepower Rotax 915 iS turbocharged engine, delivering a cruise speed of approximately 300 km/h (162 knots) while maintaining a fuel burn below 25 L/h, a remarkable efficiency for its class. Optional hybrid‑electric modules further reduce emissions for short‑range missions.

The Panthera’s significance lies in its demonstration that advanced materials, clean‑engine technology and sophisticated avionics can be merged into a practical, affordable aircraft, influencing future designs and encouraging a shift toward greener, high‑performance general aviation.
