F.E.2b

The Royal Aircraft Establishment’s F.E.2b was a pivotal two‑seat pusher biplane that entered service in late 1915 and remained active throughout World War I. Developed from the earlier F.E.2a, the “b” variant incorporated a strengthened fuselage, larger wing area and a more powerful 120 hp Beardmore engine, which together improved lift, stability and endurance. Its layout placed the pilot behind the observer/gunner, granting an unobstructed forward field of fire for a Lewis gun mounted on a flexible swivel. The aircraft’s wooden frame, fabric covering and ash‑tree longerons made it relatively light, while the twin‑bay wings with generous stagger provided good maneuverability at low speeds, essential for reconnaissance, night‑fighter and light‑bombing roles.

Throughout the conflict the F.E.2b proved versatile, serving with the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force in front‑line squadrons over the Western Front. Its ability to carry both a gunner and a modest bomb load helped shape early tactics for combined observation and combat missions. Although soon eclipsed by faster tractor‑propeller designs, the F.E.2b’s robust construction, easy maintenance and pioneering dual‑role capabilities secured its place as a transitional platform that bridged the gap between primitive scouts and the more specialized fighters that defined later aviation development.
