Saab T 18B
The Saab T 18B was a Swedish training and liaison aircraft developed by Saab Group in the late 1940s to replace the aging fleet of Stampe SV.4 trainers used by the Swedish Air Force. First flown on 12 March 1949, the T 18B combined a low‑wing monoplane configuration with an all‑metal semi‑monocoque fuselage, providing a robust yet lightweight structure. Powered by a de‑rated 150 kW (200 hp) Lycoming O‑435 engine, it achieved a maximum speed of 300 km/h and a service ceiling of 6,500 m, making it suitable for basic pilot instruction, aerial observation, and light transport duties.
Key features included a spacious side‑by‑side cockpit with dual controls, fold‑away wings for easy storage, and a simple fixed‑gear undercarriage that facilitated operations from austere airfields. The aircraft’s straightforward maintenance philosophy, based on interchangeable components and generous access panels, reduced downtime and operating costs.
Although only 45 units were produced before the programme was cancelled in 1955 in favor of the more powerful Saab 91 Safir, the T 18B proved pivotal in modernising Sweden’s training doctrine. Its design philosophy influenced later Saab trainers, and it remains a cherished example of post‑war Swedish aeronautical ingenuity.
