Shahed 149

Shahed 149 is a medium‑range, twin‑engine transport aircraft developed by the Shahed Aviation Industries Research Center (SAIRC) in Iran. Development began in 2018 as part of a program to reduce reliance on foreign aerospace sources and to give the Iranian Armed Forces a versatile platform for cargo, troop transport and medical evacuation. The prototype flew in March 2021 from Shahid Dastgerdi Airbase and entered serial production in early 2023.

Key features include a 30‑ton payload, a high‑wing design for short‑field operations, and modern avionics such as a glass cockpit, satellite navigation and fly‑by‑wire controls. Two domestically produced turboprop engines deliver 3,000 shp each, giving a cruise speed of 560 km/h and a range of 4,500 km with full load. The interior can be reconfigured in under an hour for seats, cargo pallets or stretchers.

Since entering service, the Shahed 149 has operated from remote airfields in Iran’s western and southern provinces, supporting flood relief in Khuzestan and COVID‑19 medical missions. A maritime‑surveillance version with radar and electro‑optical pods is under development, expanding its role to coastal patrol. The aircraft marks a milestone in Iranian aviation, signalling growing indigenous design capability and offering a low‑cost transport option for allied customers.
