ShinMaywa
US-2
The ShinMaywa US‑2 is a twin‑engine amphibious aircraft developed for the Japan Maritime Self‑Defense Force as a modern replacement for the US‑1A. Development began in the late 1990s after the Ministry of Defense demanded a high‑performance search‑and‑rescue platform able to operate from sea, remote islands and unprepared runways. ShinMaywa rolled out the prototype in 2003 and achieved certification in 2009; 18 units entered service by 2023.
Key features include two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127 turboprop engines with four‑blade propellers, a pressurised cabin, and extensive corrosion‑resistant treatment for salt‑water environments. The US‑2 can lift up to 2,200 kg of rescue gear, carry up to 30 passengers, and perform short‑take‑off and landing on both water and gravel strips. Advanced avionics, a fly‑by‑wire flight‑control system and a high‑lift wing give it cruise speeds of about 370 km/h and a range beyond 2,000 km, far surpassing its predecessor.
Its significance lies in boosting Japan’s maritime SAR capability, providing rapid response across the Pacific’s island chain, and demonstrating the relevance of large amphibious platforms in modern military and humanitarian missions. The US‑2 also highlights ShinMaywa’s niche expertise, keeping amphibious aviation viable in the 21st century.
