SET 2

The SET 2 was a Romanian two‑seat trainer and liaison aircraft built by Societatea Pentru Exploatări Tehnice (SET) in the early 1930s. Designed to replace ageing biplane trainers, the SET 2 first flew in 1932 and entered limited service with the Royal Romanian Air Force in 1933. Its wooden fuselage was covered with fabric, while the wings employed a mixed wood‑and‑metal structure that gave a clean aerodynamic profile and a modest 180 km/h top speed. Powered by a 120 hp radial Gnome‑Rhône 5B engine, the aircraft could reach a service ceiling of 5 500 m and offered a range of 600 km, making it suitable for pilot instruction, observation, and light transport duties. One of its key features was the fully enclosed cockpit, unusual for trainers of the period, which provided improved crew comfort and better handling in adverse weather. Although only a small batch of fifteen aircraft was produced, the SET 2 demonstrated SET’s ability to create indigenous designs and contributed to the professionalisation of Romanian aircrew training before World War II. Its legacy endures as a stepping stone toward more advanced SET models such as the SET 7 and SET 23.
