Sukhoi Su-35BM
Developed as the ultimate evolution of the Su‑27 family, the Sukhoi Su‑35BM entered service in 2014 under the Sukhoi Design Bureau’s banner, embodying more than three decades of Russian fighter development. The aircraft first flew in 2008, and after extensive testing it was certified for the Russian Air Force, where it quickly replaced aging MiG‑29 and older Su‑27 units. Its hallmark is the 4‑generation‑plus airframe, featuring a thrust‑vectoring, afterburning AL‑41F1S engine that delivers up to 15 000 kgf of thrust, enabling sustained super‑maneuverability and a top speed exceeding Mach 2.25. Advanced avionics include the Irbis‑Ef radar with an active electronically scanned array capable of tracking 30 targets and engaging eight simultaneously, integrated electronic warfare suites, and a glass cockpit with multifunction displays. The Su‑35BM can carry a diverse weapons loadout, from R‑77 and R‑73 missiles to precision‑guided bombs. Its combination of agility, sensor fusion, and payload flexibility makes it a strategic asset, showcasing Russia’s capability to field a high‑performance interceptor that bridges the gap between fourth‑generation fighters and emerging fifth‑generation platforms. Several allied air forces have expressed interest, and the Su‑35BM’s proven combat record reinforces its role as a benchmark for future Russian fighter projects.
