Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate
The Sukhoi Su‑75 Checkmate is a fifth‑generation, single‑engine combat aircraft developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau. The program was announced in 2021 as a response to growing demand for a lightweight, low‑cost stealth fighter that could compete with Western platforms such as the F‑35 and J‑31. The aircraft made its public debut at the Paris Air Show in June 2022, where Sukhoi presented a sleek tailless configuration, internal weapons bays and a blended‑wing body designed to minimise radar cross‑section. Powered by a new generation AL‑41F1M or the forthcoming izdeliye 30 turbofan, the Su‑75 is claimed to achieve supercruise speeds above Mach 1.5 without afterburner, a maximum speed of Mach 2.0, and a combat radius exceeding 1 500 km. Advanced avionics include an active electronically scanned array radar, infrared search‑and‑track sensor and network‑centric data links, enabling simultaneous engagement of multiple targets. Its single‑seat, low‑observable design reduces acquisition and operational costs, making it attractive for export customers. The Checkmate therefore represents a strategic shift for the Sukhoi Design Bureau, indicating Russia’s intent to broaden its fifth‑generation fighter portfolio and to offer a more affordable alternative in the global market.
