Sukhoi Su-57
The Sukhoi Su‑57 is Russia’s first fifth‑generation stealth fighter, developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau to replace older MiG‑29 and Su‑27 families. Design work began in the early 2000s under the name PAK FA, and the prototype performed its maiden flight on 29 January 2010. Serial production started in 2019, and the aircraft entered service with the Russian Air Force in 2020, marking a pivotal step in modernising the nation’s air combat capabilities.
Key features include a blended‑wing body with internal weapons bays, advanced radar‑absorbing materials, and a sophisticated integrated avionics suite. The Su‑57 is powered by two AL‑41F1 engines with thrust vectoring, granting superior agility and super‑cruise performance. Its AN/APG‑81‑type AESA radar, electro‑optical targeting system, and network‑centric data links enable simultaneous detection of multiple targets and precise engagement at long ranges. The fighter can carry a mix of air‑to‑air and air‑to‑ground missiles, as well as precision‑guided bombs.
The Su‑57’s significance lies in its demonstration of Russia’s capability to produce a stealth, multi‑role platform comparable to the U.S. F‑22 and F‑35. It signals a shift toward high‑tech, low‑observable combat aircraft in global air forces and influences future design philosophies worldwide.
