TAI Anka
The TAI Anka is a medium‑altitude, long‑endurance unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in partnership with the Turkish Ministry of Defense. Its development began in 2006, aiming to replace older reconnaissance platforms and to give Turkey an indigenous, export‑ready UAV. The first flight took place in September 2010 and serial production started in 2015, quickly leading to several variants such as the Anka‑S, Anka‑B and Anka‑I, each incorporating larger payload bays, satellite‑communication links and upgraded avionics.
Key features include a wingspan of 18 m, a maximum take‑off weight of 1 500 kg, endurance of up to 24 hours, and a payload capacity of 200 kg that can carry electro‑optical/infrared sensors, synthetic‑aperture radar or electronic‑warfare suites. The aircraft is powered by a Rotax 914 turbocharged piston engine and can operate autonomously or under remote piloting using secure data‑link networks.
The Anka’s significance lies in its contribution to Turkey’s strategic autonomy, its successful integration into NATO exercises, and its growing export record to countries such as Pakistan and Qatar. It has proven capable in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions, positioning Turkey as a major player in the global UAV market.
