Z 226

The Z 226, produced by the Czech company Zlin Aero, is a single‑engine, low‑wing trainer and sport aircraft that first flew in 1998. Developed as a modern evolution of the classic Zlin 526, the 226 incorporates composite materials, a glass‑cockpit avionics suite and a fuel‑efficient Lycoming IO‑540‑D4A5 engine delivering 260 hp. Its all‑metal semi‑monocoque fuselage combined with a carbon‑fiber wing provides a high strength‑to‑weight ratio, giving a maximum cruise speed of 285 km/h (155 kt) and a range of 1,200 km. The aircraft’s side‑by‑side seating, tricycle landing gear and forgiving handling characteristics quickly made it popular with flight schools and private owners throughout Central Europe. Over 150 units have been delivered, and the Z 226 has been used in aerobatic competitions, demonstrating its robust airframe and precise control response. By blending proven Zlin design philosophy with contemporary technology, the Z 226 helped revive the Czech general‑aviation sector after the post‑Cold‑War downturn, reinforcing Zlin Aero’s reputation for reliable, cost‑effective trainers that meet modern regulatory standards. Today the Z 226 remains in service with several European aeroclubs and is being evaluated for light‑transport roles, underscoring its versatility and lasting impact on training aircraft design.
