ZLIN AERO
Zlín Z-143
The Zlín Z‑143 is a four‑seat, low‑wing monoplane produced by the Czech manufacturer ZLIN AERO, a direct descendant of the post‑war Zlín series that began with the Z‑26 trainer. Development started in 1976 as a modernised version of the Z‑142, incorporating a more powerful Lycoming IO‑540‑D4A5 engine of 260 hp and a fully cantilevered wing with new flaps, which gave improved climb performance and higher cruise speed. First flight took place on 23 May 1979 and certification followed in 1980, allowing the aircraft to enter the civil market as a versatile tourer and light‑business plane. The Z‑143 features a spacious cabin with side‑by‑side seating for two pilots and two rear passengers, a sliding canopy, tricycle landing gear with optional tailwheel, and a robust all‑metal construction that tolerates unpaved strips. Avionics can be customised from basic VFR panels to modern glass suites. Over 300 units were built, mainly serving flying clubs, flight schools and private owners across Europe and Africa. Its blend of reliability, low operating costs, and forgiving handling has cemented the Z‑143’s reputation as a workhorse that helped sustain ZLIN’s legacy in general aviation.
