ZLIN AERO
Zlín Z-23 Honza
The Zlín Z‑23 Honza, built by the Czech manufacturer ZLIN AERO, is a classic two‑seat primary trainer that first flew in 1956 and entered serial production the following year. Developed from the successful Z‑26 series, the Honza was intended to replace older piston‑engine trainers with a more modern, low‑cost platform for both military and civilian flight schools. Powered by a 105 hp Walter Minor 4‑III air‑cooled engine, the aircraft features a conventional low‑wing monoplane layout, fixed tailwheel undercarriage, and a spacious side‑by‑side cockpit equipped with dual controls and a simple instrument panel, which together provide excellent visibility and forgiving handling characteristics. Its all‑metal construction, balanced control surfaces and relatively low stall speed make it ideal for basic aerobatics and instrument training. Over 500 Z‑23s were built and exported to more than a dozen countries, where they served as the backbone of pilot‑training programs throughout the Cold War era. The Honza’s durability, ease of maintenance, and economical operation have kept it in active use well into the 21st century, cementing its legacy as one of the most influential trainer aircraft in Eastern European aviation history.
